The German version of Soldier of Fortune was heavily censored. So not only were all the effects of violence from the game, but also all the names of real cities and organizations have been renamed to the fictional character of the game to stress. Nevertheless, the original and censored version indexed.
Die deutsche Version von Soldier of Fortune wurde stark zensiert. So wurden nicht nur alle Gewalteffekte aus dem Spiel genommen, sondern auch sämtliche Namen realer Städte und Organisationen wurden umbenannt, um den fiktiven Charakter des Spiels zu betonen. Dennoch wurde die originale und zensierte Version indiziert.

Um einer möglichen Indizierung zu entgehen, wurde das Spiel für den deutschen Markt erheblich zensiert. So wurden wiederum alle Blut- und Splattereffekte entfernt und sämtliche - in der Originalversion menschlichen - Personen im Spiel in Androiden umgewandelt. Deutlich erkennbar sind diese durch eine Schweißnaht im Gesicht und dem Fehlen von Schmerzensschreien. Um dieses Szenario dem deutschen Kunden verkaufen zu können, wurde zusätzlich eine weitere Vor-Vorgeschichte erfunden, die besagt, dass die Menschheit von Maschinen ausgerottet und durch Roboter ersetzt wurde. In der Originalversion hingegen kann der Spieler die Gewaltdarstellung individuell anpassen und mittels Passwort schützen. Die deutsche Version erhielt von der USK die Alterseinstufung "nicht geeignet unter 18 Jahren". Die unzensierte Originalversion ist aber bis heute nicht indiziert worden.

The U.S. version of the game is uncensored and contains a large amount of violence portrayed in detail. So können beispielsweise Gegnern mit einer einfachen Pistole nahezu sämtliche Gliedmaßen abgeschossen werden. Zivilisten gibt es in dem Spiel auch, aber diese gilt es zu retten oder zu beschützen. Eine zensierte Version ist bis jetzt noch nicht erschienen und die englische Originalfassung ist indiziert und seit dem 17. Juni 2008 bundesweit beschlagnahmt.

Soldier of Fortune war einer der ersten Ego-Shooter, bei dem die gegnerischen Computermodelle in über 20 unterschiedliche Körperregionen aufgeteilt waren, wodurch unterschiedlichste Verletzungen und Verstümmelungen simuliert werden konnten. Der Multiplayer-Modus bietet nicht nur taktisch ausgeklügelte Maps, sondern auch einen Random Map-Generator. Des Weiteren unterstützt SoF2 seit der Version v1.01 das AntiCheat-System PunkBuster. Soldier of Fortune: Payback
SOF Payback released on 13 November in the U.S. and on 30 November 2007 in Europe. In Australia the game was initially banned. For the German-speaking countries to be completed in early 2008, a censored version to appear considerably. Developed was not the third part of Raven Software, but by the Slovakian studio Cauldron, based on the licensed Havok engine.
SoF Payback erschien am 13. November in den USA und am 30. November 2007 in Europa. In Australien war das Spiel anfangs verboten. Für den deutschsprachigen Raum sollte Anfang 2008 eine erheblich zensierte Fassung erscheinen. Entwickelt wurde der dritte Teil nicht von Raven Software, sondern von dem slowakischen Studio Cauldron auf Basis der lizenzierten Havok-Engine.
