An institution in themselves, these Ministry of Sound annuals are always a good grab bag of very big tracks right now and a few more that indicate the direction of the coming season. As such they act as a statement of where dance music is in the current moment. 2009 sees some improvement on the last few years, placing this annual at least in average territory.
Disc one has John Course mixing a fairly dark set that doesn’t seem to really find its feet until half way through when the too-frequent punchy-punchy style eases off slightly into some greater melody. Goodwill’s second disc isn’t so different in style but is more interesting with some appealing vocals and better remixes (notably of the Presets, Pnau and Lovers Electric).
As seems to increasingly be the case with these kinds of compilations, the best moments are tracks resurrected from the past: Blue Monday, Finally (I wish the vocals here sounded this way the first time around), Café Del Mar, Infinity, Lola’s Theme etc. There are better things going on in dance music than this, but this – amazingly – is what’s big at the moment. Is it the drugs?
