It all begin in 1989 when Ares and the vocals Langsuyar get united with the name MORBID GOD. The base was created in Moonspell's fall in 1992. The first, and the last demo of the band, now with the name Moonspell, called ANNO SATANAE, was released in January 1993, with a total of three songs. Later, the publisher Molon Lave Records put to that edition more two songs. January 1994 marks the beginning of the band with an edition of a mini-CD called UNDER THE MOONSPELL.
The reaction to this first work was so magnifying, that the Century Media Records signed a long term contract. In the latest 1994, Moonspell get into studio for recording an album called WOLFHEART, the first long CD.
Wolfheart is an album with many stiles, from the aggressive Alma Mater, passing by the progressive Wolfshade to the heavy and darkness An Erotic Alchemy. Moonspell became so, the first Portuguese band in that kind of sound being recognised out of Portugal.
In 1996 a new album came out, IRRELIGIOUS. Opium was the first single used to promote the album, and it worked. The Opium video caused a lot of controversy in all TV's around the world, but even so the channel VIVA nominate Moonspell as the revelation
band of the past year, and made a large special program about the band.
SIN/Pecado, was their 4th album (1997) and was not as it was expected by the fans.
Moonspell was growing and experimenting new sounds that they couldn’t afford in the past. Even so, it was a mark in their career and a prelude to they’re "back to the roots" album that was THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT (1999) where the sound was powerful and the environment was breathless.
DARKNESS and HOPE was released in 2001; then in 2003 - THE ANTIDOTE, an album which is released with a book with the same title written by Portuguese writer José Luís Peixoto. Both the CD and book share the same concept and story and each song in the CD is sister to a chapter in the book that enhances the story in the lyrics.
MEMORIAL appeared in 2006 and after selling 10.000 copies, achieving gold status made Moonspell the first Portuguese metal band to come to that point.
THE GREAT SILVER EYE, a best-of album, was release in 2007 along with a re-recording of some early songs with the name of UNDER SATANAE.
NIGHT ETERNAL was released in 2008 and represents (again) a turning to the roots kind of style.
