Edit: I just realized that I got ProTools and Cubase confused, I have both uploaded but the answer is still the same. Both Pro Tools and CuBase are essentially the same in this regard. They both need hardware connected to the computer in order to install the software.

From my experience, this program needs hardware in order to install. As far as the types of hardware that is compatible, you will have to check the support forums for Yamaha CuBase AI4, make sure you have the correct one as Steinburg makes several versions of CuBase and none are exactly the same.
