Current line-up:

Max Cavalera (Guitar and Vocals)

Marc Rizzo (Guitar)

Bobby Burns (Bass)

Joe Nunez (Drums)

Max Cavalera set out almost immediately his next musical endeavor, after leaving Sepultura in 1996. So, in 1997, using music as therapy to overcome the negative events of his life (the murder of his stepson and his best friend, Dana Wells) Cavalera put together a band that included Roy Mayorga (ex-Thorn, Nausea, Crisis, Medication, Shelter and currently Stone Sour) on drums, Jackson Bandeira on second guitar (ex-Chico Science and current Nacao Zumbi), while former Sepultura lightman Marcelo Dias (ex-The Mist, XXX, Slaughter, and Mayhem) rounded out the quartet on bass.
They released the debut self-titled album in '98; Jackson left the band being replaced by Logan Mader (ex-Machine Head) who continued to tour with Soulfly.
For the releasing of Soulfly’s second album, Primitive, Cavalera replaced Logan & Roy who left the band in late 1999, with Mikey Doling (ex-Snot) and Joe Nunez (ex-Fleshold, Stripping the Pistol), the last recommended by Kerry King of Slayer himself.
In October of 2001 at the beginning of writing for the 3rd album, after just over two years with Soulfly, Joe left the band to pursue other musical interests and almost immediatly was repaced by Roy, who rejoined the band just before the recording began for their 3rd effort.
The new album, titled 3, went to stores on June 25th, 2002. After more than a year of road support for 3, Soulfly had a major lineup shift going into the recording process for the third album. Guitarist Mikey Doling (ex-snot), bassist Marcelo Dias, and drummer Roy Mayorga all left the band with little notice. Max soon replaced them with Marc Rizzo (ex-Ill Niņo) on guitar and Bobby Burns (ex-Primer 55) on bass, and had former Soulfly drummer, Joe Nunez, come back to help with the fourth record. Dave Ellefson provided the bass on some tracks.
Upon the release of Prophecy in March of 2004, the band resumed their hectic touring schedule and are currently still making stops throughout the world in support of the album. Besides releasing their first DVD ever in 2005, entitled The Song Remains Insane.
On October 4, 2005, Dark Ages was released. Many critics have described Dark Ages as a return to Cavalera’s thrash and death metal roots of the early Sepultura days, however the world metal influence found on the first four Soulfly albums is definitely present. In fact, this time, Cavalera traveled to five different countries - Serbia, Turkey, Russia, France, and the United States - in order to record all the sounds that he desired to have on the new album.
After touring the world with Soulfly and after taking time to make some live shows with his side project, Cavalera Conspiracy (along with his brother Igor), Max entered again the studio with his collegues and after a year of work they released Soulfly's 6th album, Conquer.
