The international anime sensation Ninja Scroll finally comes to comics in this unique new series! Follow the adventures of wandering ronin Jubei as he scours feudal Japan, fighting all forms of villains and monsters in search of the one thing he truly desires: a decent night’s sleep!
Excerpt from author interview:
Explain the connection between your upcoming Ninja Scroll comic book series and the original movie. When does your series take place and is there any connection to the OAV?
Torres: The first arc takes place in between the movie and the OAV. We kind of continue the story from the film but don't address anything from the OAV just yet. I'd like to lead into that at some point, though.
The OAV series tried to capitalize on the success of the movie, but earned a lukewarm reception. What is your new Ninja Scroll series doing that will help prove more pleasing to fans?
I hope people like what we're trying to do, which is examine more of who Jubei is and what makes him tick. We know what he does but why does he do it? And this is on top of trying to bring to the comics what made Ninja Scroll popular in the first place: Inventive action sequences, mystery and intrigue, freakish villains, and so on.
This is an ongoing series, correct? Do you have any long terms ideas for what you want to do with the story or do you focus on one arc at a time?
I'd like to fill-in some of Jubei's back story as well as show what he did in between the big epic stories we saw on film. Maybe we'll even go back to his youth. I'd also like to explore this version of ancient Japan as well. Who are all these super powered individuals? How are they affecting other peoples' lives? Normal people, not just the shoguns, warriors, and politicians. Where are they coming from? Why are they there? Fun stuff like that. And yes, people, there's blood and guts and gore. It's not Ninja Scroll unless Jubei slices someone in half. I'm surprised at what they've let us get away with so far.
Who can we expect to see from the movie showing up in the comic?
The Devils of Kimon. Or at least some of them. Kagero. I think the covers and solicitation copy have already spoiled that, but I hope fans will tune in to see why or how they're back. And of course, what happens to Jubei next. |
