"Written for the general reader (though not meant to be a substitute for a doctor visit), this four-volume reference contains about 600 entries on diseases, disorders, procedures, immunizations, drugs, and development of children up to age 18. The entries, which were written mainly by freelance medical writers in the US, include cross- references and definitions of key terms, as well as a list of resources. Entries on diseases and disorders address demographics, causes and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, prevention, and parental concerns. The information is presented in clear, accessible, but detailed paragraphs, with bulleted lists of symptoms and other information, and definitions of key words offered in an inset box. Entries on drugs and immunizations provide helpful information on precautions, side effects, and interactions. A sampling of topics includes caffeine, chemotherapy, dental development, itching, neonatal jaundice, shyness, toxoplasmosis, and piercing and tattoos. Appendices contain a glossary, growth charts, and a descriptive list of common childhood medications."
