Marvel August 1997
Torrent Release Notes

This torrent contains comics published by Marvel with a cover date of August 1997.  The regular series go back to normal continuity after having, for the most part, taken July off for the Flashback issues.

Titles debuting this month are Alpha Flight v2, Daydreamers, Hercules - Heart of Chaos, Psylocke & Archangel - Crimson Dawn and the oneshot Men in Black - Far Cry.  The only title finishing its run was the 3 issue Venom - License to Kill minseries.

Thunderbolts 005 is one of the issues for which Kurt Busiek won the 1998 Harvey award for Best Writer.  James Robinson was nominated for the same award for work including the issue of Cable found here. Mark Waid's work on Captain America and Ka-Zar were part of his nomination for Best Writer. Tim Townsend got a nomination for Best Inker for work including this month's issue of Uncanny X-Men. Comicraft got a Best Lettering nomination for work including this edition of Avengers.  And finally, Joe Kelly was nominated as Best New Talent for his work including these issues of  Daredevil and Deadpool.

A few notes on how this was compiled:  It started with fordor's collection for the month (thank you fordor). That collection included 34 comics.  Each issue was checked for errors, cover date and completeness.  Filenames were altered accordingly and normalized.  Where possible scans from the Official Marvel DVD set replaced the earlier versions (thank you citaltras).

A general search was made to locate either higher quality or c2c scans for all comics issued during the month (in addition to the Marvel DVD scans provided by Citaltras).  In cases where a scan of higher quality but fewer pages was found, the scan with more pages was selected, and the other was placed in the alternate scans sub-directory.

Searches were performed at Comic Book DB, at The Unofficial Handbook of Marvel Comics Creators and at CBDB (where they have issue #4 of the DC title Anarky listed as a Marvel book!).  The North American Comics Market Estimates for June 1997 was also consulted (June because of the two month cover date lead time in publication). [By the way, Marvel had 8.5 of the top ten (and 17.5 of the top 25) sellers for the month (the half being an image crossover). They had 30.62% of the comics market for the month and they were in chapter 11 bankruptcy at the time.] The searches uncovered another 16 August releases.  Copies of the available issues were added to the collection.  The proto-torrent was then made available to a group of editors and reviewers for comment and any resulting issues were addressed.

In addition to the alternate scans sub-directory, there is a fill sub-directory for July 1997 upgrades, as well as a bonus sub-directory. The bonus folder contains a few things encountered while compiling the collection that don't belong in the main set.  The May 1997 fill directory contains Casper and Friends Magazine 2 which was not included in that torrent.  It belongs between 14182 and 14183.

These are the August (probably) Marvel titles missing from the collection:

  • ClanDestine vs. The X-Men TPB (reprint)
  • Marvel Vision 020
  • Impossible Man Summer Fun Special 1997 (only in
  • Diamond list may have been canceled)
  • Spider-Man Cybercomic issues 054-057 were released in August

From the Panini Reprint line (UK)
  •  The Astonishing Spider-Man 024
  •  Essential X-Men 024
  •  Wolverine Unleashed 011

The comic "Star Trek - Deep Space Nine 008" is also available in the June 1997 Marvel torrent as #14845.  It is included here because it has an August 1997 cover date. There is no numbering system in this collection because using an adhoc scheme that is alphabetical by month leaves no room for addition or deletion of misplaced books.

    Soapbox stuff:

In Stan's Soapbox this month he talks about a made for TV movie filming in Vancouver starring David Hasslehoff in Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. It was released on May 26, 1998 to universal scorn.

In the news for August 1997:

Bankrupt Publisher Marvel Comics May Go Out of Business.
Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News,  August, 1997
    by Furman, Phyllis

Aug. 29--The jig is up at Marvel.

The bankrupt comic book company said yesterday it failed to reach an agreement with its creditors and may be forced to go out of business.

With the company running out of cash and hoping to stave off a disaster, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Helen Balick gave the venerable comic book publisher and its creditors a Sept. 8 deadline to agree on a rescue plan.

Finally (of course): Thank you to the legion of writers, artists, scanners, & uploaders who made this possible.
