F-Secure Rescue Bootable CD to Clean Virus and Malware:

Here’s another rescue disk from F-Secure can clean virus and malware without booting operating system. Basically F-secure rescue CD functionality is similar like other rescue disk which perform anti virus scanning on all hard disk and USB drives attached to the computer only. Beside that, F-Secure rescue CD is the best ways to scan for MBR rootkit infections.
Meanwhile, F-Secure rescue CD Virus definition databases can be updated within two method either is using internet connection on computer or updated manually by using a USB drive. However, F-Secure rescue CD is provided on English version only.
if you interesting using F-Secure rescue disk, you can follow below step to create the rescue disk:
1. UnCompress F-Secure Rescue CD ISO file

4. You have 15 seconds to press ENTER to start the CD or it will boot normally via hard drive. Once pressing “Enter” button, it will start uncompressing Linux and boot the OS kernel.
5. Once F-secure rescue CD is loaded, Select Next and hit ” Enter ” key again for updating F-secure virus definition database via internet access or manually by using a USB drive. The virus definition update process will roughly take few minutes depending your internet access connection.
or you can download F-Secure Rescue CD virus definition updates to a USB drive using a healthy computer. This USB drive must be empty and 256mb or greater in size. Just download fsdbupdate.run file (40MB) and save it to the root directory of the USB drive. Insert the USB flash drive to the infected computer, boot up using F-Secure Rescue CD and follow the instructions.

Repairing your PC from the AVG disaster with Trinity Rescue Kit CD (TRK):
No doubt millions of people will have the problem with the Grisoft Antivirus (AVG) that had a false positive on the windows user32.dll file.
Luckily not too many because ever since AVG 8 came out, I 've been replacing it with Avast.
Nevertheless, some of my 'customers' still had an AVG and now had BSOD's.
Here 's a way you can fix it with TRK.
If you 're lucky, the computer you 're working on has lots of $Uninstall directories from patches and such where you will find older copies from user32.dll. Even better is where you have a folder called c:\windows\system32\dllcache where you will find even more DLLs.
Whatever version of user32.dll you find on the affected computer, always look for the newest and in general, biggest one.
Here 's how got it fixed:
-An easy way to find your way around is to boot with TRK connected to your LAN.
-run 'fileserver -g' for ease of use when you 're on your own trusted home network. It will report you on which address you can find your PC back.
-browse with a (working) Windows PC to the ip address of the affected PC. F.i. do Start => Run => \\192.168.0.60
-go to the share where the windows system is located, f.i. \\192.168.0.60\hda1
-browse to the windows folder
-right click on it and search (different in Vista, but you 'lll know what I mean).
-search for 'user32.dll' and make sure it shows you the file size and date in the search results.
-look for the newest, generally biggest version of user32.dll
-copy it back to \windows\system32
-reboot the PC
-If this doesn 't fix it yet, it might be possible other files are missing or bad versions are in place. In my case, I had this with gdi32.dll.
-To figure out on what your PC is still crashing, hit F8 before it starts booting Windows and select the option where it says not to auto-reboot after a critical failure -With gdi32.dll, it said it was missing an entry point at some address. This generally is caused because some older version is in place.
-Do the same as with user32.dll: search for the newest, biggest version of this file and put it back.
-Reboot and rerun procedure on other possible files until successfull.
It 's always a good thing too to run the command 'ntfsfix /dev/hda1' (after or before fileserver is running): this will invoke a chkdsk at Windows boot time.
After success, AVG will normally update itself with a decent av signature database, but I recommend to uninstall it and put avast on it since AVG 7.5 will be out of support soon and AVG 8 is as slow and heavy as Windows Vista itself.
Also recommended:
clean up the PC by removing all $Uninstall$ folders,
clear dllcache folder,
clear %temp% (command line: cd %temp%, cd .., rd /s /q temp),
clear temporary internet files (rd /s /q "temporary internet files" ,
empty recycle bin,
uninstall any unneccessary apps and for those who really want to digg in deep: get Hijackthis from trendmicro and remove any stupid programs from startup like Adobe quicklaunch f.i.
Also browser helper objects that don 't ring a bell.
Never a bad idea is to install SP3 (just be carefull with some wireless cards, activate restore point if unsure).
Hope this helps

Avast! BART CD - Bootable AntiVirus and Recovery CD:

The avast! Bootable Antivirus & Recovery Tool (BART) CD is a breakthrough in the field of administration tools! In short, it is a bootable CD, giving you the capability to detect and remove virus infections on a computer. All this can be done fast and reliably, without the risk of spreading the infection any further. But the BART CD can do much more! It also contains tools for editing registry files and a tool to check and fix disk errors.
The latest version of the BART CD can be used on all Windows-supported file systems, i.e. NTFS, as well as less common storage devices, such as SCSI/RAID. In general, it will work on any disk device that supports Windows XP. It can also be used on non-standard devices, such as those used on servers, by using the standard Windows XP driver supplied by the hardware vendor.
The BART CD also supports networking. After network support is started, NETBIOS and TCP/IP protocols will be available. It is also possible to map network drives. Just enter the path to the drive (in standard UNC format \server\share) and select the letter to which the drive should be mapped. After the drive is successfully mapped, you can work with the network drive in the same way as any other (local) drive - e.g. it can be scanned by avast!
The BART CD is a tool no administrator should be without - or, for that matter, anybody who deals with the recovery of data on hard drives. The license model is specified as a multi-node license, which means when you buy one BART CD, you can administer multiple computers, provided the CD is used on only one computer at any one time, and only by a single user.
avast! Antivirus
The main, and most important component of the BART CD is a special version of avast! 4 antivirus. It is based on exactly the same kernel as other avast! 4 Editions, which has been certified by ICSA Labs and ensures excellent detection capabilities combined with high performance. It detects 100% of ITW viruses/worms (In-The-Wild) and also includes advanced Trojan horse detection. avast! also takes part in Virus Bulletin tests, having received the VB100 award many times.
In the latest version, the user interface of BART avast! antivirus has been completely redesigned. A wizard has been added to the interface to guide you through all the settings. The settings allow you to turn on the scanning of archives (compressed files), and much more.
Sometimes, for instance, it may be undesirable to write to the hard disk (for example, if this would overwrite deleted files that you would like to restore somehow). Therefore, for operations requiring disk storage (e.g. unpacking archives to a temporary folder), BART avast! antivirus enables you to specify where such files should be stored.
The version of avast! antivirus, included on the BART CD, is able to repair virus infections. If avast! detects a virus it is able to repair, control is given to a special module that performs the first phase of the repair process. The user is then asked to start the operating system from the hard disk. The second phase of the repair process is performed here - the infected files, together with all references (such as registry associations), are removed. For security reasons, it is recommended to perform the third phase after another test from the BART CD.
A key feature of the BART CD is the way it handles updates (especially of the virus database). It includes a Builder that works on your Windows operating system (any version) and downloads the most recent versions of the BART CD components (Internet connection is required).
The Builder then creates an ISO image which has to be burned onto a CD (ISO images are standard input files in most modern CD burning software). Since the virus database updates are rather frequent, it is recommended to use re-writeable CDs.
In emergency cases, it is possible to use the updated virus database directly from the BART CD - by loading it from a diskette.
All programs on the BART CD work with UNICODE characters, so they are fully functional even in an environment where standard code pages are not enough (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, and also some European languages).
Registry Cleaner
The Registry Cleaner will help you find and fix problems and correct inefficiencies in on-disk Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 registry hives. It also provides ways to recover the registry following virus attacks.
The program is highly configurable and enables different registry cleaning tasks to be run.
Junk File Remover
The Junk File Remover utility will help you find and delete unnecessary files that waste space on your hard drives. It can also empty system caches, such as Temporary Internet Files and IE history.
It features very fast scanning and reliable fixing of any problems found.
avast! Disk Checker
Disk Checker is a powerful tool for searching and repairing disk errors. It is quite similar to the ScanDisk tool or chkdsk.exe, supplied with the Windows operating systems.
You can select either standard or thorough tests. The thorough test additionally performs a sector check. It is capable of finding bad sectors on your disk and marking them as such.
The program works both with hard disks (including SCSI and RAID) and removable media.
Data Shredder
The Data Shredder allows you to erase files in such a way that it is impossible to recover them. When you delete a file using standard tools, only the reference to its data is removed from the system allocation tables and the file's clusters are marked as unused, but no actual erasing is performed until another file overwrites the area on the disk where the original file was stored. There are utilities capable of tracing and restoring deleted files, therefore you should never delete files containing sensitive information in the regular way.
avast! Registry Editor
An absolutely essential tool for system administrators is the avast! Registry Editor. It gives you unlimited access to the Windows Registry files located on your hard disk (Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 only). The data in the registry can be both read and modified. Some administrators consider this tool a life saver!.
The program makes registry editing as easy as possible. It quickly scans all your local hard disks and tries to locate installed operating systems, together with their registry files. The operating systems found are presented by their name and root folder, thus avoiding the need to know the exact location of the registry files (usually OS-specific). Of course, it is also possible to map a specific registry file by entering its full path.
From the moment the registry is loaded, the program is (visually) similar to the standard Windows registry editor. Its user interface is intuitive and easy. The editor even makes it possible to load the data directly from a file.
Before opening any registry file, you can specify whether the file should be backed up. If you select this option, the backup will be created in the same directory as the original file. Every time you open a registry file, a new backup will be created. If there are too many backups present, the user will be prompted to delete the old ones.
Event Viewer
Event viewer is a utility similar to the original Event Log Viewer included with Windows. It also has a very similar user interface.
After selecting an on-disk OS installation to inspect, you can browse the event logs by selecting them on the left side of the main window. Records will be shown in the main list control. The main list control consists of columns that can be sorted by clicking on its headers. You can also add/remove or reorder the columns. Record details can be viewed by double-clicking on the record. While you’re in the Event Properties window, you can navigate through the records using the Next and Previous buttons.
Services/Drivers
The Services/Drivers applet lets you manage services and drivers that are installed on the system. It also lets you make basic changes to their configuration (such as startup type).
Command-line Interpreter
Even though the tools described previously are very powerful, sometimes it is necessary to go deeper into the operating system itself. In such cases, the BART CD contains a command-line interpreter, compatible with the standard command.com and cmd.exe.
Often it is enough to delete a single file (such as a broken driver) to solve your problem; however, the BART command-line offers you much more! It has the full support of batch files; it also fully supports the XCOPY command, including all its parameters (as in the case of Windows XP).
Another key feature is the ability to run your own programs. Most Windows programs can be started in BART and you can therefore use your favorite recovery tool to restore deleted files or formatted partitions directly from the BART CD.
Servant Salamander
The BART CD also includes the popular Servant Salamander file manager. Servant Salamander makes it easy to work with files on your drives. In addition to basic functions, such as moving, copying or deleting files, is also offers advanced operations, such as searching files according to many criteria (including searching by content), group renaming, archive support (compression, decompression) etc.
The user interface is split into two halves, each one showing the content of a (possibly different) directory. Drag & drop operations are also supported.
Simple text editor
To make working with BART even easier, a simple viewer/editor of text files (Notepad-style) has been included.
This tool can be useful, for example, to view the report files generated by avast! antivirus, or to view/edit the user log files.
The program supports both ANSI and UNICODE character sets.
BART CD Shell
All available programs are presented using a simple shell that makes it possible to start the program easily. In addition, it displays the current state of the applications, license information, etc.
By exiting the shell, you end your work with the BART CD, and the computer is restarted.

Dr.Web Live CD To Scan and Remove Virus Without Starting Windows:

Have you ever encountered a computer that is so badly infected by spyware and virus that the computer is so slow and you could hardly do anything on it? Fully booting in to computer takes like 15 minutes, then to install an on-demand antivirus program takes another 30 minutes and then to update the signatures takes another hour. Running a full scan would definitely take more than an hour. The computer should be cleaned from virus IF the on-demand antivirus is able to detect and remove the virus from computer. If not, you have to spend a few more hours hoping that the next on-demand antivirus that you’re going to install can detect the virus that’s causing the slowdown.
Dr.Web LiveCD is an anti-virus emergency aid disk that would restore a system that became non-operational due to activities of malware. If a workstation or a server running Windows or Unix won’t boot from a hard drive, Dr.Web LiveCD will clean a system of suspicious and malicious files and will also try to cure infected objects.
All you need to do is to burn it to a CD. Then boot up the computer with the CD by setting your computer as the first boot device. As loading starts a dialogue window will prompt you to choose between the standard and the safe mode. Make sure that the first option DrWeb-LiveCD is selected and hit the ENTER key. Once finished loading, you will be presented with a really cool nice looking screen that has Start Menu.
There are 2 ways to scan the computer using Dr.Web LiveCD. You can either select Start Dr.Web Scanner to start scanning the hard drive, or select Start XOrg to launch the graphical user interface version of the scanner. Before scanning, I’d suggest you to update the virus signature first by selecting Start Dr.Web Update from Start Menu.
Do take note that the Rescue CDs are NOT meant to replace the real-time antivirus program which protects your computer against malware every second. It is only used when the installed antivirus fails to detect and block the virus.
If you’ve never heard of Dr.Web and not sure how good it is, here’s a report that will give you a shock! In the latest October 2008 antivirus test conducted by Anti-Malware Test Lab, Dr.Web Anti-Virus 4.44 scored a perfect 100%, making it the only antivirus that receive the Platinum Malware Treatment Award. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 and Avast! Professional Edition 4.8 tied at second place. Again, very sorry to let the NOD32 fans know that Eset NOD32 Antivirus 3.0 completely failed the test at 0%! It didn’t even manage to detect the file of the virus on an infected system, although the parent file (distribution package) is detected.
Dr.Web LiveCD is an image of a bootable compact disk which contains all necessary tools to check your computer for viruses without installation of any programs on the hard drive. The check is made by the anti-virus on-demand scanner with the newest anti-virus bases included into the CD. Dr.Web LiveCD allows to scan files in all file systems of Windows (FAT, FAT32 and NTFS).
If your computer is connected to the Internet through a local network, you can visit web-sites and check your mail with the help of the web-browser and the mail program included into it, as well as update the anti-virus bases of the scanner via the updating utility.
The main purpose of Dr.Web LiveCD is to disinfect computers operated by Microsoft Windows in case of a malware infection. Dr.Web LiveCD incorporates the modified version of Linux, which allows to reliably detect viruses and disinfect the computer invaded by malware.
The space-saving size of Dr.Web LiveCD allows to burn it on a Mini-CD and have it always under your hand.
How does it work?
1. Make sure that a CD/DVD drive or any other device with Dr.Web LiveCD is set as the first boot device.
2. As loading starts a dialogue window will prompt you to choose between the standard and the safe mode.

Norton Recovery Tool ISOs to Create a Norton Rescue:

1. Norton Live Recovery Tool for Norton Antivirus 2009
2. Norton Live Recovery Tool for Norton Internet Security 2009
3. Norton Live Recovery Tool for Norton SystemWorks 12.0
4. KeyGen+Serials
Just like many popular commercial antivirus company such as Avira, BitDefender, Kaspersky and F-Secure, Norton also has its own Rescue CD called Norton Recovery Tool where you can use it to boot up a computer (whether Windows is bootable or not) to recover a badly virus infected PC. Sometimes a computer is so badly infected by virus, your computer would be too slow to do anything or even worst, can’t boot up at all. A rescue disc would be the best way to scan your computer for virus because the virus will not be active and won’t interfere the antivirus program from doing its job. It can delete any virus found and hopefully lets you boot in to Windows again.
The latest Norton Antivirus 2009, Norton Internet Security 2009 and Norton SystemWorks v12 comes with Norton Recovery Tool. If you purchased any of the 3 Norton products above from Symantec online store, the receipt will have an additional information that says “In case you need to recover your system from heavy infections click here to download the Norton Recovery Tool“. But if you bought the product key from somewhere else such as from ebay or an OEM reseller, you will only get the genuine product key without the link to download Norton Recovery Tool.
Norton Recovery Tool provides on-demand scanning and removal or repair of viruses, spyware and other security risks. This tool is not intended to be a replacement for continuous, real-time protection from the latest security risks. Do take note that Norton Recovery Tool does not detect rootkits. The minimum system requirements to run Norton Recovery Tool is a computer with 1.4 GHZ CPU and 1GB of physical RAM.
To scan your computer for viruses, you’ll need burn the ISO file to a CD.
Then follow the few simple steps below.
1. Insert the Norton Recovery Tool CD in the CD-ROM drive.
2. Exit all programs and restart your computer.
3. When you see the message “Press any key to boot the computer from CD or DVD”, press Enter.
4. In the Norton Recovery Tool window, select your language and click OK.
5. Enter your Norton 2009 Product Key, and click I Agree to accept the License Agreement.
6. Click Start Scan.
7. Follow the prompts.
8. After the scan is completed, remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive and restart your computer.
Norton Recovery Tool uses Symantec virus definitions to scan your computer for the latest security risks. Virus definitions are automatically updated when your computer is connected to the Internet with a connection that is “always on”. Wireless connection won’t work and DHCP server must be active to provide IP address. Most of the routers nowadays are configured to automatically provide internal IP address to a computer connected to it.
Note:
Norton Recovery Tool is ONLY free for those who has a product key for Norton Antivirus 2008/2009, Norton Internet Security 2008/2009 and Norton SystemWorks 12. Notice that I didn’t use the word “GENUINE” because a 25 digit product key generated by “Norton Antivirus 2008 Keygen” (Norton.Antivirus.2008-EDGE) also works.
Included extra infos for how to register step by step.

Panda Live Safe Disk 32:

How do I create a rescue CD-ROM?
To ensure that your computer is correctly protected, your anti-malware program should be configured to update automatically and perform periodic scans.
When your computer is under threat from certain viruses, it might be impossible to start the computer, or start it in a virus-free environment.
A safe environment is a computer that does not have any viruses resident in memory nor on the hard disk that can interfere with scanning or disinfection.
In these cases, the computer needs to be started from a virus-free boot disk or rescue CD in order to scan the PC and detect and disinfect any viruses.
Panda solutions allow you to create a set of rescue disks or CD. The set of disks are generated from an option in the program called Rescue disks, and the rescue CD is generated through a previously downloaded file.
Steps for creating rescue CD
You can create a folder called c:\panda
Decompress the file. You can do this in the same folder.
Open your CD burning software.
Then click on Open ISO image and select the SafeCD.Iso file in your c:\panda folder.
Insert the CD in the recordable CD drive and select Burn in your CD burning software.
Bear in mind that each CD burning application has its own options and the instructions may be different from those described above.
It is essential that these steps are carried out in a virus-free computer.
When you have created the CD, you can boot your computer from this CD and check if it is infected.
To boot the computer from this CD, the BIOS of your PC must be configured to allow this.
When booting the computer from the CD, you will be prompted to specify the language in which you want to carry out this process, follow the instructions displayed and the scan will start.
Additional information
In NTFS or Linux file systems, the rescue disks can detect possible viruses but cannot delete them, due to the security mechanism of these systems.
The iso image generated supports SATA hard drives and USB keyboards.

What is PC Tools' Alternate Operating System Scanner?
Once a system is infected with malware it becomes difficult to remove that malware as it is already embedded in the system and has control over many components which are key to the system's operations. Malware, like rootkits, use system components to hide themselves and prevent other software from detecting or removing them. This is often the case of who gets there first; if the malware is able to get control of the system earlier on then it also has control over any software that may be run later. Besides just hiding, malware can also block the execution of other security applications. If you cannot install or run a security application in the first place then you cannot scan and detect the malware. The best time to remove this malware is when it is not running, but malware often starts with the Operating System, so we would have to stop the Operating System to stop the malware. On a shutdown OS nothing is running and malware like rootkits cannot hide themselves and so it would be easy to find and remove them.
But how do you run a security program like Spyware Doctor on a system that is not running?
You run the security application on an Alternate Operating System which has access to the files and registry of the sleeping Operating System. Its like putting the Operating System under a general anaesthesia. The Alternate Operating System Scanner (AOSS) can now scan through all the files on the sleeping OS unobscured by any other applications or malware.
AOSS functions by loading up an Alternate mini Operating System which runs the scanners, which in turn read data from the Spyware Doctor signature database. The scanners scan the files and registry entries of the sleeping OS and use Spyware Doctor signatures to identify malicious entries. The user is then given the option to remove these entries. Without the malware running, AOSS can easily find and remove any malware, even the most sophisticated rootkit.
But we still need Spyware Doctor...
When an Operating System is not running, certain structures and settings are also not available, as Spyware installs itself in various locations we still need to be able to see these structures to fully remove the Spyware.
In most cases AOSS will detect and remove the main components of a threat and SD will only be required to clean up. With the main components deactivated Spyware Doctor can easily clean up any remaining traces of the malware.
Of course Spyware Doctor does more than just scan; it guards the system while in operation, which is something AOSS cannot do. Prevention is always better than cure and Spyware Doctor will keep you protected, but if you do become infected or are already infected then AOSS offers a cure for the most persistent infections.
Alternate Operating System Scan is a Live CD for scanning a Windows® system without having to be running Windows®.
With the advancement of malware technology in recent years, and the ability of malware to hide within a running Windows® system, it was determined that a solution would be required such that a Windows® system could be scanned (and cleaned) without the need for the Windows® operating system to be running.
The Alternate Operating System Scan is an attempt to be the solution to the above problem. It is a live CD that will detect, scan, and clean malware files and associated Windows® registry keys from an infected Windows® system.
The Alternate Operating System Scan is designed to be a last resort, used to get Windows® back into a state in which Spyware Doctor for Windows® can do its job. Therefore, it only scans files and registry keys that are defined in the refdb database. It does not remove directories.
Please note that AOSS is not a supported product. The PC Tools forum for AOSS includes many tips and we encourage you to use this forum to report on successes, problems or issues encountered with AOSS.
If a valid license is not found, you may still clean your system once with AOSS.
Operating System: Designed For Windows® XP (32bit)
Supported File Systems: FAT 16/32, NTFS up to 5.1

VBA32 Rescue CD:

Recently I stumbled on a Rescue Live CD provided by Vba32. The good thing about Rescue CDs are it can scan and remove virus even without booting in to Windows. Usually it is booted from a Linux LiveCD and autoruns the scanner module. If your computer has been infected by a virus but unable to boot up to Windows / safe mode or it is too slow to do anything on it, rescue CD is probably your only chance to remove the virus and get Windows working again.
VBA32 is a less well known antivirus company internationally but it is well established in Belarus. VirusBlokAda Ltd. Has been established in May, 1997. The Vba32 products are successfully used in The National Bank of The Republic of Belarus, in all sorts of the Belarusian organizations and enterprises. Also it is installed at the mail servers of such Belarusian Internet providers as tut.by and mail.by. Vba32 is the first antivirus software which has been certified in The State Centre of Information Security supported by the President of The Republic of Belarus.
VBA Rescue runs on Linux LiveCD and uses VBA32 Console Scanner for Linux (Vba32.L). VBA32 Rescue doesn’t contain any fancy looking graphics or interface. The menus are simple and easy to navigate through so you shouldn’t have a problem using it. To get your free VBA Rescue, just uncompress the rar. Burn the ISO image with your favorite disc recording software. Insert the VBA Rescue disc and set your computer to boot up with it. You should see a menu that looks like the image below. If you’re unsure which resolution can your computer support, just select the first one by simply hitting the ENTER key.
Next you’ll get to select the language of the interface. Currently it only supports English and Russian.
You will get an information window advising you on how to work in VBA Rescue Menu. Hit enter to continue. Now you get to configure VBA Rescue on where to scan, what files to scan, what to do with the infected file, Midnight Commander File Manager and etc. When you’re done configuring, select the second option “Scanning files” to start scanning your computer for viruses with VBA Rescue.Good news is before VBA Rescue starts scanning, it will check for the latest virus signature and updates automatically.
You will need a computer with i586 CPU and 128MB of RAM. It only supports NTFS and FAT file systems. Vba32 Rescue supports auto-mounting including removable devices so you don’t need to know or memorize those elite linux mount commands. NTFS state is checked during mounting and additional confirmation dialog such as the partition was unmounted incorrectly and the partition contains system memory image (hibernate).
I personally have never heard of Vba32 antivirus before but I’ve seen it appear in VirusTotal, AV-Comparatives, Virus Bulletin, Anti-Malware Test Lab and virus.gr. Unfortunately Vba32 doesn’t perform very well at all of the tests conducted by the test lab. In my opinion, Vba32 wouldn’t be the best choice to use on desktop computer for real-time protection but no harm having another rescue disc in hand when other rescue disk fails to boot up.

Anti Virus Rescue CDs Software Compared in Search For the Best Rescue Disk.
Once a system is infected with malware it becomes difficult to remove that malware as it is already embedded in the system and has control over many components which are key to the system’s operations. Malware, like rootkits, use system components to hide themselves and prevent other software from detecting or removing them. Besides just hiding, malware can also block the execution of other security applications. If you cannot install or run a security application in the first place then you cannot scan and detect the malware. The best time to remove this malware is when it is not running, but malware often starts Windows is booted up. The only way to scan and clean the virus without booting in to Windows is by using Rescue Disk provided by some antivirus companies.
The first Rescue CD that I got to know was Kaspersky. Then came Avira, BitDefender, F-Secure, and the list goes on. I have all of the emergency rescue disk burned to CDs and honestly I really don’t know which one to use because running a full scan with one rescue disks can take hours. Today I’ve put all 13 rescue cds to the test to see which one is the fastest and most effective in scanning and removing virus.
All tests are done on 4th December 2008 and using the latest virus definition IF it supports updating of signatures. The Rescue CDs will be tested to see if it is able to detect 11 virus that I planted on the test computer and also the time spent to do a full scan. Other than that, I will also be checking if it has other tools and extra options.
1. Avira Rescue System
Base: Linux
Signature Update: Doesn’t support online update but can update signatures via CDROM or from hard drive.
Scan Time: 4mins 44secs to scan 34460 items
Scan Options: Will try to repair and if fail, will rename the virus filename.
Virus Detection: 10 out of 11
2. BitDefender Rescue CD v2
Base: Linux
Signature Update: Updates automatically but no progress meter. Can update definition from file as well.
Scan Time: 7mins 25secs to scan 22738 items
Scan Options: Will try to repair and if fail, you get to determine what to do with the infected files when the scan has completed.
Virus Detection: 10 out of 11
3. Dr.Web LiveCD v4.44
Base: Linux
Signature Update: Updates online from menu selection.
Scan Time: 1hour 27min 54secs to scan 35959 items.
Scan Options: The text scan only detects but didn’t clean/repair the 10 detected threats. If you run Dr.Web Scanner from XOrg, you will be able to cure and delete the infected files.
Virus Detection: 10 out of 11
4. F-Secure Rescue CD v3
Base: Linux
Signature Update: Updates automatically without progress meter and using external USB drive.
Scan Time: 19mins 54secs to scan 10,000+ items
Scan Options: Rename virus filename
Virus Detection: 8 out of 11
5. Kaspersky Rescue CD v8.8.1.18
Base: Linux
Signature Update: Supports online update
Scan Time: 8 mins to scan 11543 items
Scan Options: You can configure to prompt for action after finished scanning
Virus Detection: 11 out of 11
6. Norton Recovery Tool
Base: Windows Vista PE
Signature Update: Automatically update online
Scan Time: 5mins 45secs to scan 19911 items
Scan Options: Will automatically try to repair. If fail, you get to determine what to do with the infected files when the scan has completed.
Virus Detection: 10 out of 11
Other Information: Requires product key
7. VBA Rescue v3.12
Base: Linux
Signature Update: Automatically update online
Scan Time: 22mins 37secs to scan 21494 items
Scan Options: Can configure action to take when a virus is detected
Virus Detection: 10 out of 11
8. Panda Safe CD
Base: Linux
Signature Update: Not supported
Scan Time: 5mins 13secs to scan 36868 items
Scan Options: Can only scan but unable to remove on NTFS partition.
Virus Detection: 2 out of 11
Other Info: You can download SafeCD from Panda’s website which is slightly outdated or you can install Panda Internet Security 2009, go to Services tab, and click Rescue disks to create an updated one.
9. PC Tools Alternate Operating System Scan
Base: Linux
Signature Update: Via USB drive containing the most recent refdb.dat file
Scan Time: 11 mins 5 seconds to scan 10098 items
Scan Options: UNSURE
Virus Detection: 0 out of 11
Info: Scans registry and uses Spyware Doctor 4 database. This project has not been updated for a long time so no surprise that it didn’t even detect any of the 11 virus that I planted on the test computer.
10. Quick Heal Native Boot Scan
Base: Windows PE
Signature Update: Not supported
Scan Time: 2mins 50secs to scan 10063 items
Scan Options: Will try to repair and if fail, will delete the virus
Virus Detection: 11 out of 11
Extra Info: Quick Heal rescue cd is created from the antivirus client via Tools > Emergency CD. You will need to enter your Windows XP or 2003 installation disc to create the rescue CD.
11. avast! BART CD v2.0
Base: Windows PE
Signature Update: Not supported
Scan Time: 4mins 50secs to scan 10078 items
Scan Options: Lets you decide what to do with infected file after finished scanning
Virus Detection: 10 out of 11. Missed one pretty old virus, but in VirusTotal, avast! detects it as Win32:VB-EHR
Other Info: Shareware cost $149.95. Includes a lot of other useful tools such as registry cleaner, data shredder, registry editor, event viewer, networking, map network drive, ping, text editor, file manager.
12. Rising AntiVirus Software
Base: Linux
Signature Update: Not supported
Scan Time: 29mins to scan 35735 items
Scan Options: Can configure action to take when a virus is detected
Virus Detection: 10 out of 11 using definition on October 23.
13. G-DATA AntiVirus BootCD
Base: Linux
Signature Update: Supports online update, takes very long (about an hour) to download 572 AVC files.
Scan Time: 6mins 54 secs to scan 10062 items
Scan Options: Action to be taken after finished scanning
Virus Detection: 11 out of 11
Extra Info: G Data BootCD is in German language and there’s no configuration. G Data 2009 is a multi-engine antivirus that uses BitDefender and avast! engines. So no surprise that it found all 11 viruses. The previous GData 2008 uses Kaspersky and avast!.
14. AVG Rescue CD
AVG Rescue CD is a shareware that cost $149.95 for 1 user license with 1 year subscription. I’ve contacted AVG to provide me with a trial license for testing purposes but they did not even reply my email. I read on the Internet that support for AVG is very bad and I believe so because I couldn’t even find a telephone number or support email on their site. Shame on you for being such a big company but with such bad support. Every AVG user should switch to other free antivirus such as Avira or Rising.
The best Rescue CD must have the fastest scanning speed, able to detect all 11 virus that I planted in the computer, no maintenance on virus signatures via online update and lets you decide on what to do with the virus after finished scanning. So far only Kaspersky and Quick Heal able to detect all 11 virus and if compared between this two rescue CD, I’d say Kaspersky Rescue CD is the winner because it is free, supports signature updates and flexible configurations. Quick Heal’s advantage is only the super fast scanning speed but what I don’t like about it is it auto deletes the threat if unable to repair, no updates, no configuration, and it’s not free since you need to create from Quick Heal desktop antivirus.
